Neuromodulators like Botox, DAXXIFY, Dysport, and Letybo are one of the most common treatments for fine lines and wrinkles.
In fact, The American Society of Plastic Surgeons found that neuromodulator injections are the most common minimally invasive procedure performed in the US.
These injectables may be common, but that doesn’t mean they’re always administered correctly. We often treat clients who have received bad Botox at other clinics in the past and are nervous about trying again.
We’re here to help you understand how neuromodulators work and how to choose the right number of units and the right areas to treat.
How does Botox work?
Botox is a purified substance derived from bacteria.
When the botulinum is injected into the face or other areas, it blocks the nerve signals or chemicals that tell your muscles to contract. This creates a more relaxed muscle and a smoother appearance.
Neuromodulators like Botox don’t permanently remove wrinkles. They “freeze” the muscles so skin has fewer fine lines and wrinkles. Once the effect wears off, the muscles return to their normal function, and wrinkles and typical movement return.
Botox results are not immediate. Most clients start to see effects within a few days, and it can take up to 2 weeks to see full results.
Most neuromodulators are effective for 3-4 months on average.
You’ll see the best results when you combine injectables with other treatments like chemical peels, dermal fillers, lasers, or microneedling. These can improve results and prevent formation of new fine lines and wrinkles.
How much Botox do I need?
Neuromodulators are administered in units.
The number of units you need depend on several factors, including:
- Age
- Gender
- Muscle strength
- Goals
- Previous injections
At The Look, we specialize in conservative, natural results.
Our injectors don’t create the “frozen” look that can unfortunately be associated with Botox.
We highlight natural beauty and create a custom protocol to achieve a softened, refreshed look. The goal is for others to notice your smooth, glowing skin without realizing you’ve had anything done.
Depending on your unique physiology and goals, the majority of our clients receive between 20-70 units per treatment.
The natural movement we prioritize means you need fewer units to see your desired results.
Does Botox hurt?
Neuromodulators are injected with tiny needles that generally do not cause bruising and cause minimal pain.
Our clients describe the injections like a pinch similar to tweezing an eyebrow hair.
Pain is unique to the individual client and the area being treated. You may experience slightly more discomfort when injecting your jaw or lips because these areas have more nerve endings than areas like your forehead or crow’s feet.
Overall, neuromodulators like Botox, DAXXIFY, Dysport, and Letybo are relatively painless.
There is no downtime required with neuromodulators. You can return to work or school immediately after your injections, and the only restriction is to avoid excessive sweating for the rest of the day.
You can apply makeup as needed after the injection and immediately resume your typical skincare routine.
You will want to avoid any deep massaging on or around the injected area for at least 3-4 days.
What areas can Botox treat?
When our clients come in for a consultation, we don’t just look at how much Botox they’ll need.
We work with each individual to choose the right neuromodulator for their physiology, problem areas, and goals.
We’ll also create a custom cadence or injection schedule as we see how you respond to the neuromodulator.
Botox is typically used to treat these areas:
- Crow’s feet
- Forehead furrows
- Frown lines
- Skin bands on the neck
- Masseter muscles
- Enlarged pores
- Chin dimpling
If you’re not sure what areas to treat, the right aesthetics clinic and experienced injector can help you create a strategic, targeted plan to achieve the natural, relaxed, youthful appearance you desire.
