If your filler looks a little different than it did a few months ago, you're not alone.
Filler migration is not only a hot topic in the aesthetics world, it's a hot topic we discuss often in consultations.
What is filler migration? Do you need to worry about filler moving? Is there anything that can fix it if your filler does move?
We’re answering all of your filler migration questions in this post!
What is filler migration?
Filler migration happens when dermal filler moves away from its original injection site and into a neighboring area.
It isn't dangerous, but it can create a distorted or unnatural look, which is exactly the opposite of what filler is supposed to do.
Shifting filler is most common in the lips, but it can happen in the cheeks, chin, or under eye areas as well. This unwanted movement can cause lumps, bumps, or change your desired facial contours.
How to spot filler migration
Migration can be subtle at first. There are a few key signs we look for.
Red flags that indicate filler migration include:
-
The shelf effect
A ridge or fullness that appears above the lip border, giving the upper lip a "duck bill" look instead of a soft, natural curve. -
Lumps and bumps
Look for palpable fullness in areas where filler wasn't originally injected. It’s often noticeable to the touch before it's obvious visually. -
The Tyndall effect
This is a subtle bluish tint under the skin, most common with under-eye migration. This happens when filler sits too close to the surface and scatters light differently than the surrounding tissue. -
Blurry borders
A loss of definition along the natural lip line, making the lips look smudged rather than sharply defined.
If you think your filler is shifting, you should contact your aesthetics clinic or injector to see what they recommend.
Why does filler move?
Filler can move for a number of different reasons. It's rarely just one factor.
Filler migration is usually a combination of a few things like:
-
Overfilling
This is the most common culprit. Tissue has a limit, and if too much volume is added too quickly, the filler has nowhere to go but out. -
Poor technique.
Injecting too superficially, or into the wrong tissue plane, gives filler room to travel that it wouldn't otherwise have. -
High mobility
We constantly move our mouths to eat, drink, and talk. That repetitive motion can gradually shift filler over time, especially in the lips.
What happens if your filler moves?
Don’t panic if you spot signs of filler migration!
If hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, or RHA were used, migration is completely reversible.
When HA fillers migrate, your provider can dissolve the misplaced filler using hyaluronidase. This is an enzyme that breaks down HA filler. Most patients see results within 72 hours, though a few sessions may be needed to dissolve the area completely. There's little downtime involved, so this is a treatment that can often work into your existing schedule.
It’s best to wait at least two weeks after dissolving before treating the area again. This pause gives the tissue time to settle so your injector can get an accurate read on what you need.
How to prevent facial filler from shifting
The best way to deal with filler migration is to avoid it in the first place.
At The Look Aesthetics, our experienced injectors know how to keep filler from shifting.
Slow and steady wins.
We prefer smaller, incremental sessions over one large appointment. Filler is easier to add than to take away, and building gradually gives us more control over the outcome.
Anatomy matters.
We prioritize anatomy and understand which products belong in which layers of the skin. This is the single biggest factor in preventing migration. You should always ask your injector about their approach before an appointment for dermal fillers.
Trust the plan.
If your injector suggests skipping a touch-up because your tissue already looks full, that's not a brush-off. We always protect your results and make the best recommendation for your face.
Filler migration happens. You should feel confident learning about why and talking to your injector about the potential risks.
